I simultaneously destroy and create, for I feel the process is symbiotic, and something is bound to rise from disarray and chaos, much like the proverbial phoenix from the flame. Umberto Bruno Calabro has been making marks on surfaces of all sorts for the majority of his entire life. He has always been an artist of unrelenting spirit and intellect, seeking inspiration from his Italian heritage as well as developing an avid interest in science fiction and comic books while growing up in White Plains, NY. As a student of the multi-talented Art Galvin, he was quick to grasp line and form while rendering the human figure. This led to a dynamic gestural style that was simultaneously visually complex yet technically simple. At the collegiate level, under the tutelage of cutting edge artists such as John Bott, Eve Aschheim and Drew Beatty he was able to consolidate his understanding of non-objectivUmberto Brunoe formalism with his love for rendering the human body, which helped open up new avenues of pictorial syntax. Since earning his undergraduate degree at Sarah Lawrence College and an MFA from Hunter College, the artist has tried to remain free of the constraints of fashionable art concepts and has always attempted to remain true to his initial, instinctual understanding of mark making while remaining both intellectually relevant and playful. After a recent and successful battle with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, he finds himself channeling a spirit of survival and hope with recent work that praises lush colors and bold, flowing gestures, perhaps a reawakening of the love for natural beauty and form that was his initiation into the wonderful world of fine art. Umberto Bruno resides in New York's inspiring Hudson Valley with his wife Susan, son Rex and three happy cats. As a prolific creator he regularly submits work for exhibition, and presents his vital spirit and ever curious intellect to the viewers of this website so that they too might enjoy the beauty and excitement that his art has to offer.
